Meet the Wootens… I love love love this family! I met up with this family of four at the beautiful Kanapaha Botanical Gardens and they had me laughing to the point of tears ! I’m so glad we could finally get together to update your family photos and I am looking forward to many more sessions to come!

Yes, just like my mother was. We hardly have any photos of her other than the ones taken before she married. My suggestion to young people just starting families is to include everyone in pictures, if possible. The years go by too fast and your children and grandkids will appreciate seeing you as you were when you were young.
From what I can tell, anyone can post photos online of other people if it’s in a public place or venue, except for things like in public transportation. Also, if they’re explicitly told not to photograph or show someone’s face, then they also have to respect that (IE people’s faces getting blurred out on TV.)
Anyways, I just found out that a relative who considers himself a professional photographer posted photos of our family at the private memorial and burial for my fiance’s grandfather. The snapshots are not flattering of our immediate family members at all… I honestly don’t know why he would post such horrible photos to make himself look any more professional. If anything, it looks like a six year old took the photos.
Since the events were private events, we can ask him to remove the photos… but we also want to ask him to not post any photos of us in the future. I know he’s going to show up to my wedding with his camera and act as if he’s the wedding photographer… that’s the last thing I want.
The photos that we want removed are both on his blogspot blog and wordpress hosted blog… is there anything in their site agreements we can use to ask him to remove them? Or in California or federal law? Since he is a relative, we want to be as nice as possible, but give legal reasoning so he wont get too offended and will have to remove the photos.
All you can do is ask, I don’t see any actual legal avenue here. Even if an event is "private" but held in a public place, he can take photos. He can then post those photos to the world, provided he is not using them for a commercial purpose.
If he is trying to sell the photos, you have something to work with. If they are just photos of something he did that is posted on his blog, you have no real legal recourse to have the photos removed. Just ask him to take the shots down. If he doesn’t, you may wish to cancel his invite to your wedding.

My close friend’s teenage daughter takes excellent photos, and wants to pursue a career in photography. I want to ask her if she’s interested in taking a few photos of my little family, and am wondering how much I should offer to pay her. I would like to pay her for her time, use of her camera, and for any editing. I will pay for prints to be done at a local place that does photo printing.
Like I said, she is an excellent photographer. Her work could definitely pass for that of a professionals. She is passionate about photography and it shows. If I weren’t impressed, I’d offer her 20 bucks and call it good, but it’s not like that. Hence why I’m asking what you think.
If you consider what you would pay an experienced pro and then make yourself a good deal, I’m sure she will feel like she is getting a good deal also. The other thing you could do is ask her how much she wants.
I’ve been waiting and waiting to take some new family pictures… so we finally did it. I’ll post some when we get them.

Okay so my grampas 80th birthday is soon, and at first we had someone in the family taking our pictures for us. But now the person has backed out and we don’t have the time or money to get a professional photographer. I’m the only one in the family with a Digital SLR, so now this is layed upon me to be taking the photos. I’m not very experienced in this area and I’ve had my camera for only a year. Could you give me some tips so I don’t mess this up? Anything would help!
The picures will be taken outside, not very early in the moring but sometime early afternoon in a park with a bridge in the backround. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS
First of all, as another answerer has recommended, look at a lot of outdoor family portraits. Google can help you find a wide array of images that can help you out when it comes to posing, how to organize people (don’t put a three year old in the back, etc.) and other factors that can make a huge impact on how the image looks as a whole.
In addition, I assume you want to be in the image?
I’m not familiar with the XS’s spec list, but I assume it does have a timer. If so, figure it out now so you know how to use it when the day comes.
Furthermore, if you’re in the shot, no one’s holding the camera, which means you should get a tripod, or locate something nearby that you can set the camera on. It has to be close enough but not too close, and you should make sure it will be of decent height.
Before the picture day comes, try to visit your intended site a few times at the time that you’ll be taking the photo. If you can, bring a couple of people with you to act as subjects. Get a feel for the lighting, the composition you’ll want, etc. Play with the settings AND save the shots — take a look at them afterward and decide which shots look the best. By using the EXIF data, you can figure out which settings will work the best for the time of day, the lighting, and the location.
Now, if you can, I’d recommend you try to shoot in overcast lighting. But, since most cameras don’t come with a weather control setting, you might just have to deal with what Mother Nature gives you.
Good luck!
