I’m looking for a new lense for my Nikon 5000 DSL camera. I’m an amature who is looking at increasing her photography skills and want to know type of lense photographers use to take pictures of people and babies that produce such vivid and clear pictures. Any help with this would be appreciated!

Good portrait lenses are the 50mm f1.8 (cheapest, yet excellent quality – but will not autofocus on your D5000, you’ll have to manually focus). Also the 85mm f1.8 (again no AF on your camera) and the 24-70mm f2.8.

Lighting is also key to good portraiture – lighting should be ’subject driven’ – babies are plump & soft, so you need soft, high key lighting.

My company will be touring a huge photography exhibit, complete with outdoor installations, next year. We need to choose one major city in each continent to stage the event. We want to choose cities that have the most vibrant photographic communities. We all know that NYC is a hotbed for great photographers, so is Sydney. Here’s an open question to those who love to shoot: what major cities in the world have reputations of being epicentres for photographers and photography?

I don’t know any photographers and I need to find some for my midterm for school. I’m just in high school, and just starting, so I don’t want to take on anything to difficult, but still with a challenge. I need to have information to take photos in the vain of them. I do have photoshop at school to work on the photo, and can change some things around with that. Thanks so much.

I’m in my senior year of high school and plan on becoming a Professional photographer. However i’m not completely sure on what jobs are available for photographers. I don’t want to be a freelance photographer that works randomly from company to Company. Thanks for you help!

Well, I’m not sure how much help this will be, but some people work for photo studios like Sears Portrait, Olan Mills, etc…

There are also freelancers, as you said. Magazines (such as travel, food, or business) often have on-staff photographers, and so do book publishers who deal with travel books, art books, etc. Or you could open your own studio. I wouldn’t discount freelance work because some photographers make a pretty substantial living by picking and choosing who they work for. These people are lucky enough to only have to work a month or two until their contract is up, so if they don’t like the job, they always know there’s no stress about quitting. They control their own hours and don’t get stuck working for a company that they don’t believe in while waiting for a big break to come through. They’re actually building a reputation and a portfolio and gaining experience while they move from job to job rather than locking themselves into one set genre of picture taking.

Or…there’s always backing up your photography degree with a journalism degree, which would give you an edge as a photojournalist…or an education degree, which would help should you choose to become a photography teacher.

Hope this helps some…there’s probably a lot more jobs out there, but these were the first to come to mind.

As a person who is a perfectionist about pictures with friends and family, I often up the contrast of my photos and get rid of red eye and blemishes, but that’s it. I just have a point and shoot, though. What do professional photographers do in the process of editing pictures?

Depends on how well the shoot went or how much do I need to "fake."

For portraits, usually some skin softening, and blemish removing and possible eye enhancements.

For landscapes and nature, usually enhance the colors–make more vivid and such…and along with lighting.

I think the one that I do the most Photoshopping is special effects, like old and antique look, or soft and dreamy effects, and HDR-like effects.

I mean good photographers and in a studio. About how much do most photographers pay PER PHOTO or for 4 photos?

Assuming you mean portrait photographers.

A sitting fee can be anything from a few pounds to a couple of hundred.
Prints again would range in price from around 20 to many hundreds for framed canvases.

Quality photographers will be at the high end as they will be dealing with quality clients who can afford the charges for a quality service and product.
